Latrine redesign for challenging environments

Toilet pan redesign for Floating Villages
Project Location: Phat Sanday Commune, Cambodia
Client: Live & Learn Environmental Education

Like most floating communities in Cambodia, people in Phat Sanday Commune are familiar with a hole-in-the-floor toilet. Since 2008, Live & Learn has been developing a toilet design suitable for the floating communities’ lifestyle based on an Ecological Sanitation (Ecosan) Urine-Diversion Desiccation (UDD) approach. These UDD toilets have been tested in Phat Sanday Commune, Kampong Thom Province, with the aim of expanding the implementation to other communes and provinces. As demand increases, the design needs to be refined based on community feedback.

After analyzing the existing options and collecting feedback from the targeted families, AE has designed and built 3 alternative prototypes of urine diversion toilet pan in order to better fit with local constraints and preferences. The best option has been selected following a final workshop with the local community.
